Garhwal
Overview of Garhwal
Garhwal is located at the foothills of Himalayas and is an important division of the north Indian state of Uttarakhand. All the administrative affairs of this division are headquartered at Pauri district. On all the four corners of Garhwal, one can find very important places like Uttar Pradesh (in the south), Kumaon Mountain division (on the east), Tibet (towards the north) and Himachal Pradesh (towards west). Garhwal is known for its trekking plains all over. There are hardly any plains on this division. Some of the best trekking trails of Uttarakhand state are found in this division. Garhwal is home to some of the hefty and challenging peaks like Nanda Devi, Kamet, Trishul, Badrinath, Dunagiri and Kedarnath that are of heights 25661ft, 25413ft, 23383ft, 23210ft, 23181ft and 22853ft respectively. All these peaks are some of the tallest in the state.
History of Garhwal
The dynasty of the mighty Mauryan rulers have records of the name Garhwal being used in their times. Garhwal has a rich history because this has place has been mentioned in some of the most reputed mythological stories and puranas of India. Skanda Purana, one of the oldest puranas of India has mentioned Garhwal as a holy place. 7th century travel notes of Chinese explorers too have mentioned about the existence of Garhwal back then.
During 15th century, many neighbouring parts formed together to form one mighty Garhwal kingdom and it remained like that for the remaining three centuries. During the period of British entry, Pauri and Dehradun were removed from the Garhwal kingdom.
Geographical location
Garhwal is located in the North Indian state of Uttarakhand at 30.13 degrees towards the North and 79.30 degrees towards the East.

Air – Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest to Garhwal.
Rail – Rishikesh railway station, at 250km, is the closest to Garhwal.
Road – All the major cities of Uttarakhand and neighbouring states are connected to Garhwal through government and private sector buses on a daily basis.
Local transport – Since the entire terrain of Garhwal is hilly, trekking is the only option to commute within this place.
Tourist attractions and things to do
Few majestic peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath and Badrinath are located in the Garhwal division. These are of great heights and offer some excellent trekking trails. There are many ancient temples in and around the Garhwal division, which tourists can explore when they come here. Trekking and pilgrimage are the main activities of tourists who come to Garhwal.

The hotels and resorts that offer accommodation facilities have in-house restaurants that serve high quality North Indian food. Though vegetarian foods of Roti and Dalma are the local delicacies, non-vegetarian items of chicken and mutton are absolutely delicious here.
