Malayattur
Natural Extravaganza
Malayattur, found in Kerala’s Ernakulum district, is a combination of hills, lands and rivers. It is one of the few hill stations to have such an extravagant combination. Nestled against the backdrop of scenic mountains, the hill station opens up to clean and serene waters of the river and pose as a perfect visual treat for the tourists.
The Rich History of the Place
The apostle of Jesus Christ, St. Thomas, came to Malayattur during AD 52. However, when he set foot on this soil, all was not well as the locals threatened to attack him. St. Thomas made the mountains as his hiding spot. It was here that he spent most of his time praying to the Lord and sought His blessings. The place itself became a sacred spot after the saint’s arrival. St. Thomas then moved from here to Chennai and left for heavenly abode from there.
After the saint left Malayattur, people who hunted this place found a golden cross and the footprints of the great saint. The place started getting importance after these findings as many Christians started flocking Malayattur. It is not only a hill station but also considered to be a pilgrimage spot for the Christians.
How to Reach
Malayattur, situated in the Ernakulum district of Kerala, can be reached once a tourist travels 52km from Kochi. The hill here is known as the Malayattur Hill and the world famous St. Thomas Church stands tall at 609m on this hill. The exact location of this church is the Kurisumudu Hill that runs along the Western Ghats and has the scenic Periyar River running across it.
By train – Aluva is the biggest railway junction near this place. Kalady is a small station in the vicinity of this hill station.
By Air – Malayattur is strategically located as the main airport of Cochin is situated at just about 18km from the place. Cochin is a famous airport in the country because it is connected well with all the major cities. Every day, there are frequent flights that operate to and fro from Cochin.
By Road – Malayattur is easily accessible by buses and taxis from the major districts in Kerala. Situated at 45km from Kochi, there are many buses that connect other places of Kerala with Malayattur.
Weather and Best Time to Visit
The months between March and May are extremely hot in Malayattur with the maximum temperature going up to 38 degrees Celsius at times. The monsoon season that follows summer lasts between June and September. During this time, the place receives very high rainfall, thereby making the journey up and down the hill quite challenging. The months between December and February mark the winter season and it is the best time to visit this place as the chill climate and pleasant winds on the hills give an incredible experience to the tourists.

Kalady, which is the major rail station nearby, is also the birth place of the famous saint, Adi Shankaracharya. Lots of Hindu devotees come to this place in large numbers.
