Overview of Yusmarg
The attractive hill station of Yusmarg is located in Badgam district of Jammu & Kashmir towards the western part of the state. The capital city of Srinagar is just about 47km from here. Yusmarg is home to the Pir Panjal peaks, which belong to the mighty Himalayan mountain range. During winters, this place looks like it is from a different world altogether with the snow-laden meadows, huge tourist inflow, adventure activities and the bewitching beauty of the white peaks of Himalayas. This is the base camp from where trekking expeditions the wonderful peaks like Tatakooti and Sunset Peak. Yusmarg is located on the shores of Doodganga, which is a division of the main river of Jhelum.
History of Yusmarg
In the local language of Kashmiri, Yus denotes Jesus Christ and Marg denotes a place or meadows. Therefore, this place can be literally translated as the place of Jesus Christ. Legend has it that Jesus Christ had come to Yusmarg and stayed in the lush pine and fir meadows of this place for some time. This is why, Yusmarg is considered to be a holy place by people who follow the religion of Christianity.
Yusmarg is located in Badgam district of Jammu & Kashmir at a height of 2396m or 7861feet above sea level. It is inclined at 33.83 degrees towards the North and 75.30 degrees towards the East.

Air – Srinagar is the nearest airport to Yusmarg.
Rail – Jammu Tawi Railway station is the nearest railway station to Yusmarg.
Road – The bus and taxi connectivity between Srinagar and Yusmarg is quite high and comfortable, which makes it easy for tourists to come to Yusmarg.
Local transport – Trekking, Horse rides and pony rides are some of the ways to travel within Yusmarg.
Tourist attractions and things to do
Sunset Peak, Tatakooti Peak, Nilnag Lake, thick meadows covered with pine and fir trees, Pir Panjal Peaks and Charari Sharif (shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-din) are some of the main tourist attractions here. Tourists who come here can indulge in trekking, horse-riding, fishing, skiing and sight-seeing activities when they come to Yusmarg.

There are not many exclusive restaurants near Yusmarg. Since this place is mostly apt for a day’s picnic, it is recommended that tourists must pack their own food while coming here.

Bungalows and Guest Houses operated by Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation are the only accommodation options available here, as Yusmarg is a small hill-station.
