Lohaghat
Overview of Lohaghat
Lohaghat is a quiet, little hill station in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand. This area is famous for its beautiful sceneries and ancient temples. The Lohaghat temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is a major crowd puller here. This place stands at about 5755 feet above sea level and is strategically located in such a way that it is in the vicinity of many tourist attractions nearby. The temples that are found in close proximity to Lohaghat have interesting mythological connections, which is why there are thousands of Hindu pilgrims who keep visiting this place all through the year. In an era, when everybody thought Kashmir was the original paradise on earth in India, noted travellers who visited Lohaghat proclaimed that this was the paradise on earth as far as Uttarakhand was concerned. Such was the natural beauty of this place. Every year during the festivals of Holi and Rakshabandhan, this place comes to life as there are lots of festivities that happen in and around Lohaghat.
History of the place
Lohaghat is located on the shores of the river called Lohawati. It is believed that the remnants of the Banasur fort that is found here belonged to Banasur, the demon who was defeated and killed by Lord Krishna himself. The renowned saint, Adi Sankara too is believed to have visited this place, as the Advaita Ashram, famously known as Mayawati Ashram is found here.
Geographical location
Lohaghat is located in Champawat district of Uttarakhand, at a height of 5755 feet above sea level. It is famous for the Lord Shiva temple and many other mythological and religious spots nearby. The entire area of this hill-station is about 4.5sq.km. Lohaghat is located at 29.42 degrees towards the North and 80.10 degrees towards the East.
How to reach and local transport
Air – Pantnagar Airport, at a distance of 160km, is the closest to Lohaghat.
Rail – Tanakpur railway station, at a distance of 60km, is the nearest to Lohaghat.
Road – There are many state government buses that operate from all important cities of Uttarakhand and other states of Northern India to Lohaghat, quite frequently.
Local transport – Once in Lohaghat, travellers must be prepared to travel extensively on foot, as this is the best option for moving around this place.
Tourist Attractions and things to do
Mayawati Ashram, Banasur Fort, Abbott Mount, Devidhura (Goddess Temple), Pati (scenic spot), Ritha Sahib (Gurudwara) and Pancheshwar are some of the major tourist attractions in and around Lohaghat. Tourists can indulge in trekking and river rafting activities (in Pancheshwar) during their trip to Lohaghat.
Places to eat and local cuisine
Mount Abbot restaurant at around 2km from Lohaghat is a good place to eat. There are vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes available here. Among non-veg, chicken and mutton curries are local specialities and among vegetarian food, Rotis and moong dhal dishes are the local favourites.
