An overview of the beautiful hill station called Kohima
Kohima was the place where the Naga tribes had settled down in large numbers. The capital of Nagaland, Kohima is one of the most beautiful places in the state and is known for its cultural festivals. Nagaland was known as Kewhima, Kewhira and Thigoma. Kewhi was a beautiful flower for which Kohima was famous for. The British rulers who started ruling this place found it difficult to say aloud this name, therefore, they renamed the place as Kohima which has stayed on till now.
History of Kohima
The Naga tribes were known for their resilience ever since the 18th century onwards. They are very particular about their independence and didn’t want any foreigner to come to their territory and control them. Therefore, when the British tried to conquer the place, they had to face stiff competition for 40 years from the Naga tribes before they could acquire control of the place. During the Pre-Independence times, entire North East of India faced a very difficult situation as it was prone to many wars. Kohima was no different from this scenario as this place had a very politically disturbing period before the country attained Independence.

Kohima, the capital city of the Indian state of Nagaland is a beautiful hill station that is situated at a height of 1261m above sea level and the entire town of Kohima is centred on the mountains. Its geographical identities are 25.67 degrees towards the North and 94.10 degrees towards the East.

Air – Dimapur Airport, situated at a distance of 74km from Kohima is the closest airport to this place.
Rail – Dimapur Railway Junction, which is connected to other major railway stations in the country, is the nearest railway station to Kohima.
Road – Buses run by the Transport Department of Nagaland, private luxury buses, air-conditioned coaches and other various kinds of buses connect Kohima with important places like Dimapur and Guwahati every day.
Local modes of transport – Walking is the best way to go around Kohima. However, for places that are located at quite a distance, cars or taxis that are available on rent are the best options.

For tourists who want to understand more about the tribal lifestyle, Kohima Museum is a must visit place as it houses some rare artefacts about this tribe. Kohima Zoo is a must visit place for animal lovers as it contains all species of animals that exist in hilly areas.
International tourists are found in large numbers in and around the Naga Bazaar as this is where they are treated to a big collection of food that the tribal people eat. The strangest kinds of moving and living creatures are put up on sale here. Catholic Church at the hill point of Aradhurah Hill is an important place of worship and it is also the tallest church of Kohima. The aerial view of the town from this church is phenomenal. The tribal lifestyle is exhibited in full flow at Bara Basti which is a small village that speaks volumes of the lifestyle of the Nagas.
Things to do in Kohima
Trekking all the way to Dzukuo Valley and Japfu peak are two important trails in Kohima which are absolutely interesting for tourists who are interested in mountain climbing. Every year, during December, Kohima celebrates the Hornbill festival which attracts foreign tourists in a big way.
