Gyalshing
An overview of Gyalshing
Though Gyalshing is a small hill station in the Indian state of Sikkim, it has heavy doses of Nepali culture in it, because most of the people living here are Nepalis. Nepali is the official language of this place. It is connected very well with other important places like Gangtok, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Pelling. This place stands at height of 6500 feet above sea level and occasionally witnesses snowfall during winter season.
History of the place
Gyalshing was also known as Geyzing during the olden days. The town known as Yuksom which served as the capital of Sikkim during as early as 1642 is now known as Gyalshing. One can find Sikkim’s most ancient monastery in Gyalshing, in the name, Pemyangtsee Monastery. This was believed to be built around 1640. An old lake named Khecheopalri Lake is still visible in Gyalshing.
Geographical location of Gyalshing
Situated at a height of 1900 m or around 6500 feet above sea level, Gyalshing is an extremely pleasant hill station in the state of Sikkim. It is inclined 27.28 degrees towards the North and 88.27 degrees towards the East geographically. The average height of this place is around 2700 feet above sea level.

Air – The nearest airport to Geyzing is Bagdogra, which is situated at a distance of 67.6km/
Rail – Jalpaiguri, which is located as far as 98km away from Geyzing, is its nearest railway station.
Road – Buses ply between all the important cities of Sikkim and neighbouring states to Geyzing on a daily basis.
Local modes of transport – Jeeps and cars are available on hire for tourists who want to commute within Geyzing.
Attractions near Geyzing and things to do
Pemyangtsee Monastery was built around the 17th century. Intricate wooden carvings that depict the universe are found inside the premises of this Buddhist monastery. This is the oldest monastery in Sikkim. The Khecheopalri Lake is considered as holy by Hindus and Buddhists. Situated remotely within the dense forest cover, this lake is neatly maintained and is the perfect place for tourists to engage in long walking trails. The Yangtey is a wonderful point near Geyzing as it offers a stupendous view of the magnificent Kanchenjunga Peak. The Sangachoeling Monastery is the second oldest in line with respect to the period of construction. Tourists who come here experience peace and tranquillity. Trekking, walking trails and studying about architecture are some of the activities that tourists can do while they are here.
Famous restaurants and local dishes
Tashigang Resort, Ghonday Village Resort and Richenpong Village Resort are not only reputed for their accommodation facilities but also for their in-house restaurant which serve North Indian, Continental, Chinese and local delicacies. Rice items, chicken, mutton, beef and pork marinated with herbs and spices, green roasted vegetables and wine are the local delicacies available here.

The only 3 star hotel in Geyzing is the Tashigang Resort and it offers full value for money as tourists are treated with great hospitality and respect. The other reasonable options where tourists can stay are Tashigang Resort, Richenpong Village Resort and Ghonday Village Resort.
