Overview of the Kurangani Hills
Kurangani Hills is a scenic trekking spot located in Tamil Nadu in Bodinayakkanur district. This place is strategically located in such a way that it is quite close to one of the top tourist destinations in Kerala – Munnar. Kurangani Hills is very beautiful mainly because it is less explored by tourists. Even local inhabitants of Bodi and Madurai have not ventured out to explore the mystic beauty of these hills. It is indeed surprising to note that there are quite a few foreigners who frequently visit this place every year. During the months between August and December, the climate is pleasant and the natural sceneries in and around the hills are in full bloom, making it the peak season for travelling to this place. Kurangani Hills is located at a height of 345m above sea level.
This is situated on top of the Western Ghats and is known as for its huge and lush estates of coffee, mango, coconut and all exotic varieties of spices plantation. A remarkable stream flows through these mountains connecting Kurangani Hills towards the East with another beautiful hill range, Kozhukkumalai towards the West. This place, due to its abundant natural beauty has attracted many a Tamil film maker. Kurangani Hills has featured in movies like Myna, Azhagar Samiyin Kuthirai and Kumki.
How to reach and local modes of transport
Air - Madurai airport, which is located at a distance of 101km away, is the nearest airport to Kurangani Hills.
Rail – Bodinayakkanur Railway station, which is a located at a distance of 16km away, is the nearest railway station to Kurangani Hills.
Road – There are lots of Government and Private Sector buses that operate from Madurai to Kurangani Hills almost daily. There are cars and jeeps available from Bodinayakkanur to this place too, as the distance is just about 16km.
Local modes of transport – Auto-rickshaws and jeeps are the local modes of transport available here. However, since Kurangani Hills is a famous trekking spot, travelling on foot is the best option.
Attractions and Things to do
Samabalaru Waterfalls and the huge plantations of coffee, spices and mango are the major tourist attractions for tourists who come to Kurangani Hills. Trekking is the main activity that they can indulge in here. Kurangani Hills is known to be a great place for trekking. Located at about 35km from Munnar, most of the tourists who are spotted here are the ones who have come from Munnar to trek down these hills. The 12km trekking trail from the Kurangani Village up to the hill takes about 4 hours to get completed because the ambience for trekking in these hills is quite challenging. The wind turns quite chilly, temperature keeps dropping, terrain gets tougher and overall the path becomes quite difficult to traverse through. However it takes just about half of this time to come down the hills. This place also has great flora and fauna which can keep the nature-lovers entertained during their stay here.
Famous restaurants and local cuisine
Kurangani Hills does not have any restaurants. There are only a few shops selling refreshments all along the trekking trail. For eating options, one has to go to Bodinayakkanur district for some decent varieties.
Where to stay in Kurangani Hills
In the Central Village, which is halfway through the trekking trail, is thinly populated. There are two cottages that tourists can choose to stay in. Most of the foreigners who visit Kurangani Hills bring their own tents and prefer sleeping in the open, as it is exciting and adventurous to do so.
