Malshej Ghat
An overview of Malshej Ghat
This is a must visit place for tourists who love trekking and biking as there are some wonderful trails here. During particular seasons, this place is filled with migratory birds from all over the world and attracts the attention of many ornithologists. The flamingos that come here during monsoons are huge crowd pullers. Other than this, the cuckoos, rails, quails and crakes are some of the rare species that are found here in large numbers.
History
The caves that are found in the Malshej Ghat are believed to have existed right since the Buddhist era and are as old as many thousand years. This place is believed to be as old as the mighty Western Ghats as this hill station is found right behind the mountain ranges of Sahyadri. Known for its innumerable landslides during monsoons, tourists who come here are warned by the local authorities to tread carefully on the slippery trekking tracks of this place.
Geographical location of this hill station
Malshej Ghat is a hill station in the state of Maharashtra and has the districts of Thane and Ahmednagar on its borders. It is located at a distance of 154km and 130km from Mumbai and Pune respectively. The geographical identity of this hill station is 19.20 degrees towards the North and 73.46 degrees towards the East.
How to reach Malshej Ghat and local modes of transport
Air – Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai is the closest airport to Malshej Ghat, as it is located at a distance of around 150km from the hill station. This airport is connected well with all other major airports of the country and the ones in foreign countries as well.
Rail – Kalyan railway junction, at a distance of 75km from this place, is the closest. Kalyan is a major station where trains to all parts of the country like Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune etc. halt.
Road – There are regular buses from Kalyan, Mumbai and Pune to Malshej Ghat for the benefit of the tourists.
Local transport – Most of the tourists who come to this hill station come in their own vehicles. There are cars and taxis available for hire from Kalyan and Mumbai, however, they tend to be too costly.
Attractions of Malshej Ghat
Pimpalgaon Joga Dam – This is a dam built across the River Pushpavati and it stretches for about 5km. This dam also proves to be the resting places of many birds like cuckoos, flamingos, green pigeon, pitta, alpine swift and purple coloured moorhen.
Harishchandragad – This is an important hill fort and is a major tourist attraction for people who come to Malshej Ghat. There are various intricately-carved caves within this fort and they are believed to have been in this place since the 17th century onwards. There is also a beautiful lake here close to the main temple of Harishchandreshwar.
Malshej falls – This is a beautiful waterfall and is in full flow during the monsoon season. The rhythmic sound of the water, the sensational rains, chillness in the climate and the thick cover of fog make this place look like a paradise on earth.
Shivneri Fort – This place has a lot of historical significance as this was the place where the great Maratha Emperor, Chatrapati Shivaji was born. This fort has excellent defence mechanism with its strong and durable citadels, countless rocks and a very strong wall. This place gives a sneak-peek into the architectural brilliance of the Maratha clan during the earlier days.
Things to do in Malshej Ghat
Trekking is one of the primary activities that tourists can indulge in while in Malshej Ghat. The Harishchandragad Peak is famous for its trekking trails. Nature walks can be undertaken by kids and adults in the vast expanses of the thick forest covers of this hill station. A lot of families enjoy their picnic here by lighting a bonfire in the evenings and singing and dancing all through the night enjoying the beauty of the hills.
Famous restaurants in Malshej Ghat and local delicacies
Since this is quite a small place, there are not many options for eating out for tourists who come here. Holiday Flamingo Resort, operated by the Maharashtra State Tourism Department is the best option available as the restaurant here serves great vegetarian and non-vegetarian food for the visitors. The Visvash Garden Restaurant is another option for tourists who want typical North Indian food. Jhunka Bhakar and Thecha are the local delicacies of this hill station.
Accommodation options in Malshej Ghat
MTDC resort, Sushant Holiday Resort and Ranvara Residency are the three budget hotels that are found in Malshej Ghat for the comfort of the tourists. The tariff of this is on an average of INR 1500 per night. There are no star hotels in this hill station.
