History and Overview of Nedumkandam
Nedumkandam, the capital town of Idukki district, is one of the most developed towns of the district today with lots of improvement in the field of education and infrastructure. Today, Nedumkandam is a place where many educational institutions have been established. Situated at 3200m above sea level, this scenic hill station is known for its cardamom and pepper plantations. It also doubles up as a wildlife sanctuary that houses some of the most exotic varieties of flora and fauna. It is located on the prime tourist route between Munnar and Kumily, thereby proving to be one of the hot spots of Idukki.
Lots of farmers from neighbouring cities and towns came and settled down in Nedumkandam many centuries ago and started doing their spice plantations. During the period between 1960s and 1980s, this place was overflowing with farmers from various places who had come here as the soil of Nedumkandam was best suited for agriculture here than anywhere else. Almost every family in Nedumkandam has a cow, therefore, this hill station proves to be the main source of milk supply for neighbouring towns like Kochi, Kottayam and many more. While pepper cultivators are mostly Malayalees, cardamom cultivators are mostly Tamilians who have settled in Nedumkandam from their native villages like Cumbum, Bodi and Madurai areas.
Nedumkandam, situated in Idukki district in Kerala, is one of the most economical and commercial places of this district. Situated at 3200 feet above sea level, Nedumkandam is inclined 9.50 degrees towards the North and 77.95 degrees towards the East.
