Askot
Overview of Askot
The small town of Askot is located on the foothills of the Himalayan Mountain Range in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. The famous Musk Deer Sanctuary is located here. Askot can be found on the major pilgrimage route that leads to Kailash Mansarovar. Askot is very picturesque place that is replete with snow-clad peaks, rivers, valleys, meadows and clean air. This is set up on the banks of Gori Ganga Kali River.
History of Askot
Askot was ruled by many rulers belonging to different dynasties in the past which explains the large number of forts here. The name Askot comes from the name Assi Kot, which means eighty forts in the local dialect. Nepal’s Doti rulers, Rajbar clan, Chand dynasty and Gorkha kings ruled over this place in the centuries that went by. The last set of rulers of this place were the British rulers.
Geographical location
Askot is located in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand at a height of 1106m or 3629feet above sea level. It is located at 29.77 degrees towards the North and 80.35 degrees towards the East.

Air – Pantnagar Airport, at a distance of 295km, is the nearest to Askot.
Rail – Kathgodam railway station, at a distance of 268km, is the closest to Askot.
Road – All the major districts of Uttarakhand and neighbouring states are connected with Askot with a wide network of buses that travel to and from Askot on a daily basis.
Local transport – Travelling on foot is the only option to commute within Askot.
Tourist Attractions and things to do
Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary, Intersection point of Gori Ganga and Kali Rivers, Dhanlekh (a holy place for Hindus) and the remnants of the royal fort used by the royalty of yesteryears are some of the major tourist attractions in Askot. Trekking, pilgrimage and sight-seeing are the major activities that tourists can indulge in when they come to Askot.
