Champawat
Overview of Champawat
Champawat district in Uttarakhand state stands tall at 1610m above sea level and is home to many interesting tourist spots. When the Chand Rulers reigned control over the Kumaon region, they chose Champawat as their first capital. This is one of the most cultural districts of the state as it is deep rooted in culture and traditions. The tribal community people who live here celebrate the festivals with the same fervour and joy as they did during the 10th century. History of the place
King Arjun Deo was an important ruler in the Chand dynasty. He had a daughter named Champawati. The district is named after this princess. She was the celebrated little sister of the Nag kings and the site where she used to pray in the olden days, is where a Baleshwar temple is situated today. Champawat, which was known as Chamapwatpuri in the days of Chand rulers, was the capital of these Nag Kings and continued to thrive under their rule. According to the epic of Mahabharata, the five Pandav kings remained in Champawat for a while during their 12-year exile period. The world-renowned Champawat tiger is from here.
