Overview of Koraput

History of Koraput
There are many stories that are floating around, regarding the reason why Koraput got its name. However, there is no concise proof for the authenticity of any of these stories. During 1870s, the British rulers chose Koraput as their base as the ambience and soil of this district guaranteed good health and living conditions. One of the theories behind the name Koraput is that initially this place was named as Kora Putti, which means the land of the nux vomica trees. However, what is contradicting this reason is that, today, one cannot spot even a single nux vomica tree anywhere close to this place.
It is also believed that a person named Khora Naiko, who worked in the kingdom of Nandapur rulers laid the foundation stone for this village and worked tirelessly for the development of this place. As a token of recognising his services, the Nandapur rulers had sanctioned the naming of this place as Khora Puttu, which later came to be addressed as Koraput. Nevertheless, today, there is no proper documentation certifying the existence of this person.
Koraput district in Odisha is located at 870m above sea level and is a famous tourist destination in the state. It is located at 18.82 degrees towards the North and 82.72 degrees towards the East.
