Overview about Iritty
Iritty is the “Coorg of Kerala” as it is surrounded by natural beauty all around, be it the River of Valapattanam or the Kudagu and Kottiyoor Hills. There are many places in and around Iritty which are absolute delights for a large number of international and domestic tourists who come here. This is also one of the many beautiful hill stations in the North Malabar area of Kerala.
Iritty town was earlier known as Iratta Puzha, which means ‘Two Rivers’. The word Iratta got transformed into Iritty with the extended usage. The original name of this town stemmed from the fact this town was nourished from the waters of two rivers namely, Barapuzha and Bavalipuzha. During the course of time, this town also got the services of the Aralam River. Today, this place stands as one beautiful spot that has all the right ingredients to make it a great vacation spot like mountains, hills, valleys, rivers and lush, green farmlands.
Iritty is a town situated in the North Malabar area of Kannur district in Kerala. The Panchayath administration that controls this place is of Keezhur –Chavassery area. The towns where farmers are living in large numbers like Keezhapally, Mattannur, Vallithode, Angadikaavu, Edoor, Charal and Anappanthy are quite close to Irrity, which makes it one of the most visited commercial cities as well. Located in the Thalassery Taluk, Iritty is inclined 11.59 degrees towards the North and 75.40 degrees towards the East.

Air- Calicut International Airport, at a distance of 83km, is the closest airport to Iritty.
Rail – Thalassery Railway station, at a distance of 31km, is the closet railway station to Iritty.
Road – From Thalassery, Kannur and other major districts of Kerala, there are regular government and private buses that go to Iritty on a frequent basis.
Local transport –Buses are the best modes of transport for going around the Iritty town.
Tourist Attractions and things to do
Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary – This is just about 8km from Iritty and is famous for its exotic and rare species of wildlife and plants. There are some peaks inside this sanctuary, with the highest peak standing tall at about 1145m above sea level.
Pazhassi Dam – This is a dam that has a rich history. It is a huge tourist spot and looks extremely lovely during the monsoons. This is probably one of the few dams in the country with gardens. There are lots of places explore around this dam as well.
Things to do
Trekking over the small peaks of the sanctuary, safaris in the wildlife sanctuaries and participating in nature’s walks along the forests are some of the activities that tourists indulge in when they come to Iritty.

Sagar restaurant, Highway Inn, Rara Avis and Hotel Central Avenue are some of the most often-visited restaurants near Iritty. Since this is a great tourist destination, these restaurants offer international cuisine like Chinese, Continental, Thai etc. in addition to the local Malabar cuisine of Kerala which consists of lip-smacking fish, mutton and beef curries and soft Indian breads like Paratha.
