Kedarnath
Overview of Kedarnath
Kedarnath is a pilgrimage town located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. This is a quiet, little hill station that plays host to the renowned Kedarnath shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Kedarnath is situated in a very remote location and the path that leads to this temple is very complex. Most of the area of Kedarnath is quite barren and the terrain is very challenging indeed. Pilgrims need to possess immense physical and mental stamina in order to get to the interiors of the temple. Kedarnath is located at a height of 3553m above sea level. Kedarnath town is surrounded by snow-clad Himalayan peaks all around. The floods of June 2013 caused severe damage to Uttarakhand state had an impact on Kedarnath as well. Udar Kund which is a place that is found here contains water that is a combination of waters from five different oceans, which is why it is believed to be special.
History of Kedarnath
During Satya Yuga, the area around this state was ruled by King Kedar. The town of Kedarnath got its name from this ruler. His daughter was named Vrinda and she was considered to be a form of Goddess Lakshmi. She made this place very special by conducting several prayers and ceremonies here. As a token of recognising her contribution to this place, Kedarnath was also known as Vrindavan. Kedarnath has been mentioned in the Indian epic of Mahabharata as well, as this is the place where the Pandav Kings performed severe penance to make Lord Shiva happy.
Geographical location
Kedarnath town is located in the holy Rudraprayag district in the North Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is situated quite close to the sacred Mandakini River. Due to extreme cold climate and severe snowfall, the Kedarnath temple is closed for the public during the months between November and April. This town is located 30.44 degrees towards the North and 79.04 degrees towards the East.
How to reach and local transport
Air- Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun, at a distance of 238km, is the closest airport to Kedarnath.
Rail – Rishikesh railway station, at a distance of 216km, is the nearest to Kedarnath.
Road – Gaurikund, which is the place where tourists coming to Kedarnath must get down, is well connected with all the big cities of Northern India through government and private sector buses. There are enough taxi services from the airport and railway station to Gaurikund.
Local transport – From Gaurikund, trekking, pony rides and manchan services are some of the local modes of transport available.
Tourist Attractions and things to do
Kedarnath temple (one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples in India), Chorabari Tal (Lake cum glacier), Gaurikund, Vasuki Tal and Samadhi of Shankaracharya are some of the major tourist attractions in and around Kedarnath. Trekking and pilgrimage are the main activities that tourists can do when they visit Kedarnath.

There are no exclusive eating joints in Kedarnath. The resorts that provide accommodation have restaurant facilities. Food is strictly vegetarian as Kedarnath is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage centres in the country. Typical North Indian food like Rotis, Dalma, Dhal fry and chat items are the local specialities here.

Priyadarshini Syalsaur, GMVN Tourist House Kedarnath and Bhopal Bhawan are some of the reasonable budget hotels that offer great services and provide full value for money.
