Lunglei
An overview of Lunglei
Lunglei can be literally translated as “Bridge of Rock”. A huge bridge built across the Ngashih, a branch of Tlawng River, resembling the shape of a big rock is the characteristic feature of this place. One can find this hill station towards the south central part of the state of Mizoram. Mizo is the official language of this place.
History of this hill station
There are references about Lunglei existing right from the 18th century onwards. The Hill Districts of South Lushai had Lunglei as their capital during the time between 1888 and 1898. During the same time, Aizawl was the capital of the Hill Districts of North Lushai. After a decade of separation, these two sections were united. During the Independence movement, India experienced partition, wherein Lunglei was directly connected with Chittagong in Bangladesh. It was from this time onwards that the historical, commercial and political significance of Lunglei grew tremendously.
Geographical identity of Lunglei
Situated at an average height of 2368 feet or around 722m above sea level, Lunglei is located 22.88 degrees towards the North and 92.73 degrees towards the East.

Air – There are no airports in Lunglei and the nearest one is the airport at Lengpui.
Rail – There are no railway stations in Lunglei and the nearest station is at Silchar.
Road – There are lots of cabs, private and government buses that run between the capital Aizawl and Lunglei all through the day. The capital city is located at a distance of 91km from Lunglei.
Local transport - Buses are the most comfortable modes of transport to commute within Lunglei. These buses, though overcrowded, are very budget friendly and offer full value for the money for the tourists who want to go around the town locally.
Attractions at Lunglei
Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary – Situated at a height of 1300m, this wildlife sanctuary is located at a distance of around 170 km from the capital city of Aizawl. Barking deer, Leopard, Sambar, Hoolock, wild boar, gibbon and serow are some of the animals that are found here in large numbers.
Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary – This is located at a distance of 240km from the capital Aizawl. This area is famous for wild elephants that have migrated here from the neighbouring country of Bangladesh. Sambar, barking deer, wild boar, Indian bison, Hoolock, giant squirrel, jungle cat, leaf monkey and a host of rare species of birds are found here in plenty.
Saza Wildlife Sanctuary – This is situated at a distance of 160 km from Aizawl and is located in the deep forest covers. Leopard, Rhesus, Deer and other rare species of birds are the specialities of this area.

Trekking, nature walks into the dense forests, safaris to view the exotic wild animals from a close range and shopping at the local bazaars are some of the activities that tourists can do when they visit Lunglei.

U Oddey Te Restaurant is one of the most visited restaurants in Lunglei by the international and domestic tourists. There is a great deal of choice for non-vegetarians as pork, meat and fish dishes are available in plenty in the restaurants here. Panch Phoran Torkari and chhum Han are the vegetarian delicacies available here.
