Overview of Lansdowne
Lansdowne is a remote hill station located in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand state. This is located at a height of 1700m above sea level and the path that leads to this place has a thick cover of oak and blue pine trees all along. This is a beautiful spot and is famous for its deep valleys that offer fantastic views of the snow clad peaks of the mighty Himalayan Mountain Range. This chillness in climate, dense fog cover over the peaks, chirping of birds, gentle rustle of the trees and the humming sound from the steep valleys make Lansdowne one of the hot tourist destinations of Uttarakhand state.
History of the place
In olden days, that is, before the advent of British rule, this place was known as Kaludanda. During 1887, Lord Lansdowne became the Viceroy of India and it was under his mentorship that the hill station was constructed and developed. Therefore, the place was named after him. He identified this place as the main recruiting and training centre of the Garhwal Rifles Team, a section of the Indian Army. Even today, it is this team, along with able coordination from the State Government that takes care of all the affairs of this hill station. During 1970s, Lansdowne was only the second major city in the state after Almora. Therefore, it became a hub for commercial activities. Lots of people from different religions started settling down in this hill station that was nestled nicely at the backdrop of the Himalayas.
