Chamoli
Overview of Chamoli
Chamoli belongs to the Garhwal division of Uttarakhand state and is the second biggest district in the state. This is a hub of pilgrimage and tourist spots. It is strategically situated in such a way that it is bound by Tibet (north), Pithoragarh and Bageshwar (east), Almora (south), Garhwal (south west), Rudraprayag (west) and Uttarkashi (North West). Gopeshwar is the headquarters or capital of Chamoli. Chamoli is blessed with abundant natural beauty all around which is why it is visited by thousands of international and domestic tourists all through the year. Chamoli is located at 955m above sea level.
History of the place
Chamoli was an important part of Garhwal area in the olden days. It is believed that Garhwal, which was known as Kedarkand earlier, has been mentioned in the important Indian epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Vyas Caves located in close proximity to this place was the venue where Lord Ganesh wrote the first few verses of Vyas Mahabharata.
Geographical location
Chamoli district that is found in the Garhwal section of Uttarakhand is headquartered at Gopeshwar and spread on 7613 sq.km of area. It has a height of 955m from sea level and is located at 30.42 degrees towards the North and 79.33 degrees towards the East.

Air – Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun, at a distance of 222km, is the nearest to Chamoli.
Rail – Rishikesh railway station, at a distance of 202km, is the nearest to Chamoli.
Road – Many buses operated by the State Government and private sectors, ply from places like Badrinath, Rishikesh, Champawat, Gopeshwar, Dehradun and other big cities in Uttarakhand and from Delhi to Chamoli quite frequently.
Local transport – Jeeps and cars on hire, local buses and trekking are the local modes of transport for travelling within Chamoli.

Non-vegetarian food is very scarcely available due to the presence of many temples in Chamoli district. North Indian meal comprising of wheat, rice and moong dhal dishes are the local specialities here.
