Kodachadri
An overview of Kodachadri
‘Adri’ is an ancient word in the Sanskrit language and is used mostly to denote hills. Kodacha is a world that means Jasmine of the hill or the Girimallika in the local language. Therefore, the place Kodachadri is used to denote the hill where jasmine flowers grow in large numbers. This place is situated in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. The dense covers and the fog-covered mountains of Kodachadri that stand tall at about 1343m above sea level have been given the status of “Natural Heritage Site” by the State Government of Karnataka.
History of this place
The Kodachadri hills that are found on the mighty ranges of Western Ghats had managed to kindle the curiosity of the local inhabitants of this place about thousands of years ago. Huge rock structures of about 12 feet of height have been constructed in the vicinity of this area and these structures are believed to have been constructed during the prehistoric era. These hills are considered to be very sacred by millions of Hindu devotees who come here every year because according to legends, this was the place where Goddess Mukambika fought against the fierce demon, Mookasura and killed him. One can find a temple dedicated to the Goddess at the peak of this hill.
Ever since the days of the British, these hills have proved to be a great trekking spot. During 18th century, Lewin Bentham Bowring, who was then Mysore’s Commissioner, had commented that Kodachadri hills had quite a steep terrain and housed some of the thickets forests on their way. He also recorded that from the peak of these hills, the view of Karnataka state was absolutely beautiful. The famous temple at Kollur, which is quite close to Kodachadri, was constructed by Saint Adi Shankara who spent a lot of time meditating on these hills. Even today, most of the devotees who visit Kollur temple, do not fail to trek down the wonderful peaks of Kodachadri.
