Corbett has become one of the most popular places for the tourists, and the national park offers plenty of sightings of animals and birds, in their natural habitat.
In the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, along the sub Himalayan region of Tehri Garhwal, is located the extensive park of Corbett. Not only has the Corbett National Park earned the distinction of being the oldest national park in India, it is also the oldest in Asia, primarily formed during the British era, for the conservation of forest region in the Nainital region. Corbett National Park forms a major ecological system, marked by the presence of the Lesser Himalayas towards its northern side. Inside the Corbett Park, there is a forest rest house at Kanda, at an altitude of about 1300 mts, which is the highest point inside the region. Most of the flora and fauna is influenced by the Himalayan ranges, as well as by the Shiwalik hills, which run across the park in an east west manner. Towards the southern end are the Terai Bhabar regions, which are kind of sloppy and having swampy lands. Few rivers cross the landscape of Corbett, giving the animals a good place to have their water supply. Ramganga is the major river, while smaller rivers like Sonanadi, Palain and Mandal also add to the ecosystem of the Park. Kosi is another river, which skirts the park catchment area, getting torrential during the monsoons. With the ecosystem of Corbett National Park having suitable ambience for growth of plenty of plant species and existence of wild animals, it has become one of the most important and well protected ecological systems of the country. It is therefore natural for the tourists to arrive here on their visits during weekend getaways from Lucknow to Corbett and enjoy the area to their fullest.
Historically, Corbett National Park presents quite an interesting picture due to its claim to be the first reserve forest area in India as well as in Asia and went on to become the National Park by efforts of some of the English officers and the famous hunter and naturalist, Jim Corbett, after whose name, the National Park has been christened. It is also India’s first tiger reserve, with a long history of conservation forest and natural heritage. It is present between two important hill ranges, Kumaon and Garhwal. In the past, the area was under the princely state of Tehri Garhwal, most of these given to the British administration by the local rulers, so as to prevent the accession. Some of the British officers thought about providing protection to the wildlife and plants in the region, continuously pursued by Jim Corbett, and in 1879, the forested areas were declared to be under Reserve Forest Zone. In the 1900s, this region was thought to be put under active National Park, and in 1930, official demarcation of the place was undertaken. It was named initially as Hailey Reserve Forest with an area of about 323 sq km. The forest was not allowed to have hunting, but timber for domestic purposes was possible to be cut. It was named Ramganga National park in the year 1955, but in 1956, it was renamed as Jim Corbett National Park. Over the years, the area was increased to more than 797 sq km and buffer areas were demarcated around it, to prevent poaching and animal hunting. It was also declared as a tiger reserve forest. It included the Kalagarh forest division, where the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary was merged with it. In 1974, the park was chosen as the primary site for Project Tiger. Presently, Corbett National Park is one of the 13 areas marked out by World Wildlife Fund under the Terai Arc Landscape Programme, which aims to protect the corridor of forest which would link 13 protected areas of Nepal and India to allow for migration of wildlife.

Spot booking facility is available at Ramnagar, but usually the lodgings are filled up as the forest is available only for 6 months of the year. It is also a constraint that tourists can book the lodgings for a maximum of 3 days only. There are only a few accommodations available within the jungle region, but the booking has to be done 45 days in advance, without any online booking facilities, which seems to be a bit farfetched for tourists coming from a distance, although those on weekend getaways from Lucknow to Corbett can easily get these done, if they have contacts with travel agents. Alternatively, plenty of accommodations are also available outside the jungle core zone, especially on the road running from north to south, between Sitabani Reserve and Corbett National park.
