Weekend Getaways From Delhi to Mathura
Pilgrimage places have a large number of tourists and devotees coming in for paying their reverence. People try to cover these places on a short visit and therefore the weekend getaways from Delhi to Mathura is a great means for allowing tourists from the region of Delhi to arrive for a visit to this holy town in Uttar Pradesh. For being considered as the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the town has a long history, related to the mythology and is known as Braj or Brij Bhoomi. It is therefore obvious that the place has a huge popularity among the hindus, who come to get blessed by the Lord and have a firsthand knowledge of the place where Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu was born as a human being. Its pilgrimage importance adds up due to its proximity to the other famous hindu pilgrimage sites like Varanasi, which is 11 kms away and Govardhan, which is about 22 kms away. In the past, the town of Mathura was well known as a major trading hub, and in the present day, it is a fast growing city.
The mention of the city of Mathura has been done in the epic of Ramayana and Mahabharata, which is closely related with the birth of Lord Krishna. Many puranas also have mention of this site, closely related to the gods. Maurayan empire was considered to be having a control on this region during the 4th century BC. During 100 BC, lot of Jain followers were considered to be living in the region. In the Buddhist era, there were lots of Buddhist structures built during the 400 AD and prior to that. Although much is not known about the era after that, most of the recent history mentions the annexing of the city by Aurangzeb and during this time, a few Muslim structures came into existence.
Road and railway connections to Mathura are quite efficient from various cities of the North, making it easier for the tourists to come on weekend getaways from Delhi to Mathura. Railway lines are connecting Mathura to various cities in the north and most of the trains pass through Mathura, during their travel to the different parts of the country. Uttar Pradesh Road Transport Corporation has many buses travelling from major cities in the state to the town of Mathura and passing along to different cities. Although, there are no airports in Mathura, plans are afloat to built a big international airport in the region.
Since the city is closely related to the birth of Lord Krishna, it is possible to find a number of temples related to Him, the most famous being Dwarkadeesh Temple. Built during the year 1814, the temple is the largest and most frequented place among all the temples in the region.
Krishna Janma Bhoomi is the place which is believed to have been the birthplace of Lord Krishna, and this religious site is divided into two different parts. One part of the complex has a prison cell, which is believed to have housed the parents of Lord Krishna were imprisoned. There is another complex, which is the larger part, containing the idols of a lot of gods and goddesses, making it one of the most revered places for the devotees of Krishna.
Old fort makes one of the important quilas in the city of Mathura and is found near the Swami Ghat, which was build to protect the city from the waves arising in the Yamuna River. Ganesh Temple is another important temple in the region, built for other god such as Lord Ganesh. Along the river Yamuna, a number of Ghats can be found in Mathura, which are auspicious places for conducting various religious ceremonies. Mathura Jain Chorasi is a worship place for Jain followers and has the largest statue of Lord Jambu Swami, constructed from a single granite stone.
Activities possible in the region
Apart from visiting the temples and taking part in religious ceremonies, the tourists coming on weekend getaways from Delhi to Mathura can also go for boating in the river Yamuna, by the side of which there is the temple of Durvasa Rishi, Ramleela is often played during the months of September and October, during which time, the whole episode of Ramayana is played out and enacted in a huge proceeding.
Since there are plenty of tourists arriving in Mathura, primarily for religious regions, it has been seen that the town has lots of ashrams and rest houses and lodges, which are available at low rates. Besides, there are plenty of resorts and luxury hotels, if people want to stay during the weekend getaways from Delhi to Mathura.
While touring Mathura, people can also go towards the other regions such as Kelva Dev Sanctuary for watching the wild animals and birds, Black water of Gokul Barrage, Vrindavan, Old Mathura along the banks of river Yamuna, Gokul, Baldeo, and a few other places of historic importance.
Since the town of Mathura is gradually expanding, there are local buses which have been put into service by the local government. People can easily move from one place to another, if they have their own taxis or four wheelers or can hire a cab in the local region. Some places can be visited by walking, which are quite near to each other.
