Weekend Getaways from Lucknow to Dehradun
Travelling southwards from Delhi, at a distance of about 256 kms, lies one of the most picturesque hill station cities of India, known as Dehradun. It has been one of the favourite destinations for tourists from India as well as outside and in recent years, it has become well marked as a site of second homes for many residents in North India. Dehradun is also a favourite location for weekend getaways from nearby cities like Lucknow, which is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.
History of the place
Enmeshing a glorious past, probably from the days of the Pandavas and Kauravas in mythology, Dehradun was a prominent site during the British rule in India. Its significance further heightens by the presence of Ganges on the east and Yamuna on the west, which in their own means have historical significance. It was during the British era that the place was a vacation place for the officers. Eminent independence struggle leaders like Jawahar Lal Nehru and Rash Behari Bose frequented this hill station and were fond of the place and its climate.
Dehradun is mostly hilly with the green valley called the Doon Valley. Himalayas border this hill station from the north and there are other well known spots nearby, which also fall on the lesser Himalayan range and Sivalik hills.
Lot of people in India associate Dehradun with highly acclaimed educational institutions and of late, this has become a place for setting up various segregated Indian industrial headquarters such as Ordnance Factory, factions of Defence Research and Development Organisation, Wildlife Institute of India, etc. These places also make for some of the sightseeing locations in Dehradun.
Reaching Dehradun
Dehradun has a big railway station, which has trains coming in from different parts of the country. Delhi, Kolkata, Varanasi, Indore, Mussoorie, Mumbai, etc have trains coming to Dehradun. Road connectivity is also quite good, allowing tourists to arrive in tourist buses run by the state government and also by the personal vehicles or taxis. People coming in from Lucknow can opt for buses and even trains. Flight connectivity is also there for travelling into Dehradun, which has the Jolly Grant Airport, about 20 kms from the city centre. From the airport, tourists can reach the hill station by taking up taxis or buses.
Accommodations
Encased between mountains and rivers, the valley makes for a perfect weekend getaways from Lucknow to Dehradun. Famous sightseeing places in Dehradun
Well known sightseeing places in Dehradun include the Tapkeshwar Temple, Kalanga Monument, Chandrabani, Wadia Institute, Santala Devi temple, etc. Roughly, the tourist areas in Dehradun can be separated into sporting activities like mountaineering, rock climbing, monuments which include a number of government institutes and offices, sanctuaries, and travel to natural sightseeing places. There is a famous Buddhist monastery in the region, known as Mindrolling Monastery, belonging to the Nyingma tradition. A shooting range having the name of Jaspal Rana is established here. Robber’s Cave is a well known picnic spot, where a strange phenonmenon with water is seen. A number of waterfalls and picnic spots mark the entire landscape of Dehradun. There are also trekking paths, which are taken up by the tourists to unwind and get energised.
Nearby tourist places
Not only in the region of Dehradun, but some distances away from the city, one can find beautiful locations for spending their day. Sahastradhara is about 14 kms away, where sulphur springs are found, which is believed to be having medicinal properties. Trekking in the Garhwal hills and plenty of other places is a great adventure trip for the tourists. Dakpathar is about 45 kms from Dehradun, where tourists can find a serene relaxing point for them, with the Yamuna river flowing nearby. Mussoorie is a hill stations about an hour’s distance from this hill station, giving a chance for the tourists on weekend getaways from lucknow to Dehradun, to enjoy the visuals of two important hill stations in one visit.
Best season to visit
Temperatures in the hill station of Dehradun are always on the cooler side, throughout the year. Heavy snowfall can be seen in the months of December to February, which can be a trouble, although many tourists arrive for snow skating and enjoying the ice. During the rainy season, there is a good amount of rain, but the greenery can be alluring, although not much traffic is seen during this period. The best time to visit the hill station of Dehradun is from February till July, so that tourists can escape the heat of the plains and find a cool weekend in this hill station.
Local commute
Due to the small extent of the town of Dehradun, one can cover the area on foot, helped along by the cool climate and comfortable breeze blowing along. If people need to visit the outskirts of the city for sightseeing, then taxis are available in plenty from rental companies. One can also take personal cars with which they have arrived into the hill station. To move from one place to another inside the hill station city, shared autorickshaws are available from various stops in the city. These three wheelers are known as Vikrams, which can travel to any part of the city.
Food joints
Since the hill station of Dehradun has a lot of visitors coming in from various parts of the country, as well as from outside, food joints and eateries are found in plenty in this location. Almost every street has a well known eatery, serving sweetmeats, veg and non veg items. One can enjoy the scenic beauty by stopping at a roadside eatery and devouring the freshly prepared delicacies. Restaurants are comfortably arranged for the tourists, which serve meals of north Indian styles, while a few also cater to the south Indian tastes. In the hill station, there is no dearth of finding cheap and tasty food items, where the tourists can also order the foods to be packed to be taken on excursions and trips.
