Weekend Getaways From Chandigarh to Shimla
Shimla has become a hotbed of holidaying in India and is visited by thousands of tourists from different parts of the country. Located in the northern part of India, it is also the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, where the britishers had their initial influence by making it their summer capital. Built from a conglomeration of 19 hill states, it was having a major interest among the britishers. They not only built up the area as a tourist destination, but added a number of beautiful buildings in the region in the Tudorbethan and neogothic architectural style. Prior to the British accession, there had been the presence of local tribes and clans in the region, although history of its capture by Nepalese rulers have been documented. It is also believed that the Gupta Empire had a presence on this hill terrain, although for a small period of time. Many of the buildings constructed during the period of British presence, are now attractions in Shimla.

There is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. This is the highest point in Shimla and gives a beautiful view of the entire region of Shimla.
Chadwick falls is about 7 kms from Shimla and is a sought after destination among the tourists. During the monsoons, this waterfall is filled up with down coming water and gives a splendid view to the surroundings.
Dorje Drag Monastery is a beautiful monastery in the region of Shimla, which is a good place to visit for understanding the Buddhist culture.
Christ Church makes for an interesting visit during the weekend getaways from Chandigarh to Shimla, which is also the second oldest church in North India. there are stained glasses adorning the church, giving a beautiful shape to the building and the frescos make the church further attractive.
Viceregal Lodge is an imposing structure, which has gardens surrounding the main building, with one side of the building having the slopes of the Himalayas. Teak panelled interiors are highly attractive.
Tara devi temple, dedicated to Goddess Kali, is among the best temples in the region, which can be visited by trekking, so that beautiful sceneries are visible when going along the road with the town below. There are some museums and art galleries in the Mall road of Shimla, which can be seen during the trips, so that the history and flora and fauna of the region can be known in quite a detail. Most of the history of Shimla can be known from these museums and art galleries.
Reaching there
Shimla railway mountain train is not only a highlight of the hill station, but people coming for weekend getaways from Chandigarh to Shimla can easily arrive at this point on this train. While travelling on the train, which has been declared as a UNESCO world heritage site, beautiful views of the valleys can be seen. There are also options of reaching the hill station from the town of Chandigarh, by travelling till Chandigarh in train and then going to Shimla through the road, which meanders across the sharp bends and slopes of the hills. Taxis and cabs as well as tourist buses are also available from Kalka to Shimla, which is also possible from various other hill stations. Tourists coming in flights can land in the Jubbarhatti airport in Shimla itself, about 22 kms from the main city centre. Only smaller aircrafts are possible to be landed in this airport, although regular flight services are found to Chandigarh and Delhi, from where travel to Shimla is quite easy by road.
Hotel accommodations

For tourists, the accommodations are in resorts, hotels as well as in dormitories, which can be quite affordable. Season to visit
Since Shimla is the summer capital, people can arrive here during the summer months, for spending a few days in the cool climates. But, other seasons can also be quite fun for the tourists, as they can have snowfall during the winters, while the monsoons make the region quite green and vibrant, with beautiful clouds going along the hills. Picturesque sceneries are visible almost in all seasons, and tourists can find it interesting in almost every season.
Tourists can visit the hill station of Shimla and then commute locally in the region by walking, as it is not very large. Still, tourists can find the rickshaws and cabs and even horse riders can be found as a means to move around from one place to another. There are some areas like the Mall region, where vehicles are not allowed and therefore it is having simple walking pavements.
