Weekend Getaways From Chandigarh to Manali
For a short visit to the hill station of Manali, a lot of tourists are coming in from the nearby regions, so that they can experience a fresh environment in this famous hill station in the Beas River Valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh, also surrounded by the Kullu Valley. With an average height of about 2050 mts, there can be a beautiful climate for the tourists, which could be a great relief from the summers of the plains. Manali hill station is part of the large Kullu valley and Beas River Valley, which is believed to be inhabited by nomadic hunter tribes. In the mythology, it is believed that Manali was the stop where Manu had arrived to infuse life in the world, after it was purportedly destroyed by the great floods. When the britishers had occupied the land, they found it suitable as a hill station and came here for their summer holidays. It was the british, which started the concept of plantations and in a short while after their occupancy, various fruit orchards and plantations came up, along with the presence of various flora and fauna. Apple plantation is the most popular in the region, with this being a major source of income. In recent years, tourism has become another important source of income for the people, as lots of tourists from different parts of the country come here for their holidays, mostly during the summers and winters, especially for enjoying the snow during winters. Reaching there
Tourists from different regions can arrive by flight into the airport located at Bhuntar, which is about 50 kms from Manali and about 10 kms from Kullu, often referred to as the Kullu-Manali Airport. The nearest international airport is at Chandigarh. Lots of airlines operate regular flights into the region, so that people can come for weekend getaways from Chandigarh to Manali.
National Highway 1 goes up to Chandigarh and from there onwards, the National Highway 21 passes through Kullu township. From Chandigarh, the distance to Manali is about 273 kms, and this can be travelled in taxis and cabs and by tourism buses. Although rail lines are not present till manali, the nearest railway head is at Chandigarh, while narrow guage railhead is present till Joginder Nagar about 135 kms. There is proposal of having a railway track through Manali, passing onto Leh.
Getting around in Manali

Hiring a taxi in Manali itself is also possible, which can help in travelling to the famous sightseeing places. There are also facilities for hiring motorbikes in Manali, which also makes it easy for travelling in this hill station. Buses are there but are not at frequent intervals. Those who wish to travel by foot, can do so, as the sightseeing places can be reached by trekking.
Sightseeing places
Rohtang Pass is a beautiful place for the tourists, coming in for weekend getaways from Ludhiana to Manali. It is a great site for viewing the rising peaks in the Himalayan ranges, with their snow caps and the shining sun on their slopes. Most of the time, this is quite cooler than the surrounding areas. Some tourists, if they seek adventure, can travel ontowards the rohtang pass on foot. Due to the hilly terrain, a number of small and large waterfalls can be found in the region, such as the Jogini Falls, which is about 2 kms walk from Vashist temple and the hot water springs. It is an interesting trek while going up towards the falls, which provides a picturesque place. Near the Jogini Falls is the hot water spring, whose water is believed to have medicinal properties with sulphur. A small Vashisht temple is located near to the springs, which have been built since long back and are beautiful to look at. Hidimba Temple is one of the very well known temples in manali region, which is dedicated to Hidimbi Devi, a known figure from Mahabharata. It is believed that she did penance at this place and a temple has been constructed in the location. Jagatsukh is a well known region, which was supposedly the former capital of Manali and has plenty of famous temples in the region. Lot of structures have been found in this place which are related to Buddhism, with a few monasteries, gompa and stupas, depicting different religious leaders of Buddhism.
During the visit to manali, tourists can arrive in the picturesque locations and indulge in various sightseeing activities as well as go for the mountaineering activities such as paragliding, rock climbing, river rafting, etc. Interested tourists can go for trekking in this location, which is considered to be the starting point of a number of trek routes, across the Himalayan valleys and provide various grades of routes, for different types of tourists. Tourists coming in for weekend getaways from Chandigarh to Manali can go for these treks for a day, which can be refreshing and exhilarating.
Accommodations
For tourists, a lot of places can be found for staying, ranging from the lesser priced budget hotels to the luxurious resorts and high end hotels belonging to the famous Hotel Groups. These can either be booked prior to arriving in the location, or tourists can get the available accommodations after they arrive in Manali, where dormitories are also available for the tourists.
Best season to visit
Manali is a great place for the summer vacations, due to the cold climate present throughout the year, while winters can get snowy, making it perfect for honeymooning, so that couples can arrive for weekend getaways from Chandigarh to Manali. In monsoon, the rains are substantial, but still can be a wonderful time for visiting the region, as this allows the tourists to experience the greenery all around in the valley.
