Jawhar
An overview of Jawhar
Jawhar is known for its cultural and historic beauty. This place was set up as early as 13th century and was one of the princely states in the state of Maharashtra back then. Most of the local inhabitants of Jawhar are tribal people and they belong to Warli, Kolcha and Kukana tribes. This place is indeed situated in a strategic location as it is around 165km from the commercial hub of Mumbai and around 80km from the pilgrimage town of Nasik. Marathi is the official language of Jawhar hill station and there are around 15000 people living here.
History of Jawhar
During the British rule, Jawhar was a part of erstwhile Bombay Presidency. The British Rulers gave this place a 9 gun salute position. The state has a rich history as it was established around 1343 AD by Jayabha Munke who belonged to the Munke dynasty. Jawhar was expanded and built by his son, Dulbarrao and he was given the title of Raja of Jawhar. However, he became a Muslim to marry his sweetheart. When he passed away, the royal authorities didn’t want his son to become the ruler on account of his converted religion. When the British took over, Jawhar which was part of Bombay Presidency later became a part of the Indian Union.

Jawhar is situated in the district of Thane in Maharashtra. Considered to be a municipal council, Jawhar stands at an average elevation of around 1466 feet above sea level. It is located 19.92 degrees towards the North and 73.23 degrees towards the East.

Air – The Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai is the nearest airport to Jawhar as it is situated at a distance of 165km from here. Needless to say, this airport, located in the financial capital of the country is well connected with many international and domestic cities.
Rail – The Victoria Terminus Railway station, at a distance of 165km from Jawhar is the nearest railway station. It is a very important railway junction and is connected with all the important places in the country.
Road – The Maharashtra State Transport Department and many private operators run various buses between Jawhar and all the major cities of Mumbai.
Local transport – There are lots of jeeps and cars that tourists can take on hire while going for sightseeing within Jawhar. Tourists from Mumbai can also drive down to Jawhar for a weekend getaway.
Attractions in and around Jawhar
Maruti Temple – Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, this is an ancient temple situated within the depth of the deep forests. This place is also known as Katya Maruti Mandir by the local people.
Hanuman Point – The valley that is found in front of the Maruti Temple is known as the Hanuman Point. This place offers a panoramic view of the entire hill station. The climate is quite chill here. The Shahapur Maholi Fort is quite a sight from this point. This point is filled with natural beauty with the early morning fog and the lush green cover that surrounds it.
Jai Vilas Palace – This beautiful palace made of pink stone is a big tourist attraction in Jawhar. Built by Raje Yashwant Rao Maukane, this archaeologically brilliant structure has also got a beautiful garden within its premises.
Sunset Point – This point is located at a distance of around 0.5km away from the main hill station. Thousands of international and Indian tourists come here to view the orange rays of the setting sun from this magical point.
Jai Sagar Dam – This dam was constructed in the year 1956 as part of the royal family’s initiative towards public welfare. The royal family was so considerate that during those days, the entire cost of constructing this dam was borne by them.
Shirpamal – This is a structure that was built around 300 years ago. This was also the place where the great ruler, Chatrapati Shivaji camped regularly.
Kalmandvi Waterfall – The most surprising factor about these waterfalls is that, there is continuous water here throughout the year. Situated at a height of 100m, this is one of the most beautiful natural waterfalls in the country.
Things to do in Jawhar
Though there are not many adventure activities in Jawhar, tourists can indulge in some water activities at the waterfalls here. Rope-climbing is also an activity that is quite famous here.

There are no noteworthy hotels in the hill station of Jawhar, however in Kelichapada tourists are welcomed to a variety of community kitchens where they are treated to some absolutely delicious tribal foods. Snacks like Vada Pav and tasty Jalebis are the local delicacies of Jawhar.
