An Overview of Ramakkalmedu
The beautiful hill station of Ramakkalmedu is located in Idukki district and is on the border of the South Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The view from the peaks of Ramakkalmedu is absolutely heavenly. One can get an excellent aerial view of some small towns in Tamil Nadu such as Theni, Bodi, Cumbum, Thevaram etc. This is one of the windiest places in the country. Wind keeps blowing continuously at a pace of around 35km per hour which is one of the major reasons as to why this place is a huge tourist destination today. The vast green expanses surrounding the hills, the chilly peaks and the cool wind that blows across one’s faces are reasons enough for making Ramakkalmedu one of the top tourist spots not only in Idukki, but also in Kerala. This is only the second district in Kerala to have a windmill installed in its premises. This windmill operates at a capacity of 12.5MW. Grass and bamboo trees dominate the forest lands of this place.
History of this place
Rama denotes Lord Ram, Kal means leg and Medu means place. In short, Ramakkalmedu is considered to be the place where Lord Ram had set foot, when He was looking for Ravana’s whereabouts. This is the belief that is in practice even today by the local inhabitants here. This very fact explains the rich history and the religious sentiments that are attached to this place. There is also a statue each for Kuravan and Kurathi (tribal man and woman) thereby proving that this place was in existence even during the Sangam period, one of the ancient golden eras of Tamil Nadu.
Ramakkalmedu is located in the Idukki district on the route connecting Munnar with Thekkady, which is about 15km distant from Nedumkandam. It is inclined 9.47 degrees towards the North and 77.14 degrees towards the East. This place stands tall at 3500 feet from sea level.
