Jowai
An overview of Jowai
Jowai is an important hill station and is the headquarters of the district of Jaintia Hills. Located in the beautiful Indian state of Meghalaya, the tribal population of Pnar clan form the majority of the local inhabitants here. Situated at a height of around 1380 m above sea level, Jowai is known for its pleasant climate all through the year. This is one of the hot summer retreats for most of the tourists due to the chill climate.
History of Jowai
Jowai is predominantly a plateau that has the charming Myntdu River on three sides and has Bangladesh at its border towards its southern part. The Indo-Bangladesh border, situated at a distance of about 50 km from here, is one of the most important tourist spots in Jowai. As is the case of many parts in Eastern India, Jowai is the perfect representation of tribal lifestyle. Over the last decade or so, Jowai has assumed a lot of political significance as a lot of business establishments and educational institutions have been set up in this place.

Jowai which serves as the headquarters of Jaintia hills is a remote hill station that is located in Meghalaya. English is the official language of Jowai and its geographical identity is 25.30 degrees towards the north and 92.15 degrees towards the East.

Presbyterian Church of Jowai – This church, believed to be around 150 years old, is the most ancient church in the Jaintia Hills district and is a huge tourist attraction in Jowai for its excellent British architecture.
Thadlaskein Lake – This Lake was founded by Sagar Nangli and is one of the most beautiful tourist spots in Jowai.
Lalong Park – This is a park that is located in the remote areas of Jowai. Though this is one of the less-travelled places in Jowai, this park offers an excellent walking trail for tourists. The spectacular beauty of Myntdu River is visible from this place.
Nartiang Monoliths – This area is a treat for art-lovers as it houses a huge collection of Monolith paintings at one place.
Syntu Ksiar – This is an absolutely breath-taking valley, the beauty of which is aggravated by the Myntdu River, which is the major water source of this valley.

There are no major tourist activities in Jowai. Trekking is an activity that is undertaken by few tourists. Visiting the temples and understanding the flavour of the tribal people are the major activities in Jowai.

CTC Orchid Inn, situated at 6km away from Jowai is a good restaurant that offers accommodation facilities as well. Pork is the local delicacy of Jowai. Other than this, meat and fish are also enjoyed very much by the local inhabitants. The chicken, fish, mutton and pork dishes are prepared using the local herbs and curries. A dish called Tungtoh made from beans that are fermented and a dry fish dish known as Tungtap are other common dishes in Jowai.
