History and Overview of Lakkidi

Lakkidi, located at 700m above sea level, is one of the tallest places in Wayanad district of Kerala. It ranks second in the world in terms of rainfall received. One can imagine the greenery and pleasant climate that exist here all through the year with so much of rainfall. Lakkidi is a scenic hill station surrounded by nature everywhere. Pookot Lake is just about 5km from here. There are lots of resorts in and around this place for the comfort of the tourists. Fog-covered peaks, chill climate, perennial moisture in the air, height of the place, excellent flora, panoramic view of the valley, rhythmic flow of water in the lake and the mind-boggling curves of the roads that lead to it have made Lakkidi one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Kerala.

Geographical location

Lakkidi is located on National Highway No. 212, on the Ghat Road connecting Thamarassery and Kozhikode. The main district of Kozhikode is just about 58km from here and the hot Thamarassery Ghat Pass is just beneath Lakkidi. The tourist town of Vythiri is 3km away from here.

How to reach and local transport

Air – Kozhikode Airport, at a distance of 110km, is the closest airport to Lakkidi.

Rail – Kozhikode Railway Junction, at a distance of 100km, is the nearest railway station to Lakkidi.

Road – Buses from various nearby state governments like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in addition to Kerala operate buses frequently to Lakkidi, connecting it with important cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Mangalore, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram.

Local transport – Travelling by foot is the best option to explore the small town of Lakkidi as it is an ideal place for trekking.

Attractions and things to do

Pookot Lake, Chain Tree, the biodiversity reserve here, Thamarassery, Palappuram Shri Durga temple, scenic Shoranur city, Muthanga Wild Life Sanctuary, Chelakkara Temples, Vaniyamkulam monuments and Manissery Palace are the famous sight- seeing places in and around Lakkidi. Apart from relaxing, tourist need not do any other activity here.

Vythiri Resort is one of the best in Kerala with its awesome wooden style cottages and great food. There are no exclusive restaurants in Lakkidi and tourists will have to eat in the in-house restaurants at these resorts. Puttu, Aapam, Kozhi curry, Mutton korma, fish curry marinated with coconut and ginger gravy and dessert made from jackfruit and jaggery are some of the local delicacies here.
