Dharamkot
Overview of Dharamkot
Situated in the Kangra Valley district of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamkot is known for its lush and green mustard fields all over the place. This is a tiny hill station from where the Dhauladhar Mountain Ranges look truly breath-taking. This place is nestled within so much of natural beauty and extravagance that many international tourists have settled down perennially here in small village houses. This place is also the hub of Tibetan culture and has many meditation centres like Tushita, Dhamma Shikara and Vipassana, where people can come and learn more about Buddhism according to the Tibetan traditions and values.
Geographical location
Dharamkot is located at just about 9km from another beautiful hill town, McLeod Ganj. It is located at 32.24 degrees towards the North and 76.32 degrees towards the East and at a height of about 6920 feet above sea level.
How to reach and local transport
Air – Gaggal Airport, at a distance of about 32km, is the closest to Dharamkot.
Rail – Pathankot railway station, at a distance of 95km, is the nearest to Dharamkot.
Road – There are lots of buses operated by Delhi and Himachal Pradesh Governments that ply from important places in these places to Dharamkot on a daily basis.
Local transport - Travelling on foot is the only available option to commute within Dharamkot.
Attractions and things to do
The temples dedicated to Shindi Mata, Lakshmi Mata and Laka are some of the major tourist attractions here. Tourists can also visit the innumerable meditation centres that are found here. Trekking is the only activity that tourists can indulge in while they are at Dharamkot.
Places to eat and local cuisine
There are no fancy or big, branded restaurants in Dharamkot. There are only a few cafes and roadside eateries here. Local specialities are soup with noodles and roti stuffed with beef curry, which fall under the Tibetan cuisine category.
