Champhai
A brief look into Champhai
Champhai is a hill station located in the Champhai district in the state of Mizoram. Surrounded by hills all around, Champhai is one of the famous tourist spots of the state. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for the people of Champhai. Rice and grapes are cultivated in plenty here every year. This is located on the border of India and Myanmar, therefore, it occupies a significant place in the state’s economy. There are lots of business dealings that happen between Mizoram and Myanmar where goods from the latter are brought into the former and are sold at a profit by the traders of Champhai. Mizo is the official language of this place.
History of Champhai
Champhai which stands at a total area of 3185sq.km today was once the headquarters of Lalbura Sailo, a general from Mizoram who was targeted by the British during the 1870s. During the British Era, this place was recognized as a fort due to its hilly nature. Ever since its inception, Champhai has been an important trading hub in the state of Mizoram. Fabric, jewellery and electronic items were imported from Myanmar and were sold at slightly higher rates in Mizoram, through which traders earned their living. Even during the hot summer season, the maximum temperature of this place has always been around 20 degrees Celsius making it one of the most sought after summer retreats of the British.
