Kuttikkanam
History and Overview of Kuttikkanam
Kuttikkanam is a hill station which is remotely located within the thick forest covers of Idukki district in Kerala. Located at around 3500 feet above sea level, this place is famous for its expansive tea estates. One can spot this scenic place in the Idukki district of Kerala within the Peermede territory.
Until 16th century, this place was virtually empty and barren, when the Changanassery rulers were in control of the place. It was only during 17th century, when the Travancore royal dynasty defeated the Changanassery clan and ruled Kuttikkanam that few developments started happening here. A missionary, Henry Baker started planting coffee on the vast and lush lands of Kuttikkanam, however, when under the reign of Sri Moolam Thirunal, coffee plantations gave way to tea plantations.
When the British rulers arrived, the place indeed got noticed by many because the first public limited company, Aerial Ropeway Limited was set by them. Kuttikkanam slowly grew into a big commercial destination. Even the Travancore kings considered this place to be one of the best summer retreats as they built their palace here. It was during this time that lots of people started coming in from various parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu to find work in Kuttikkanam.
