Chirmiri
Overview of Chirmiri
Chirmiri, is a serene hill station that is dominated by the presence of coal mines in it. It is located in Koriya district in the state of Chhattisgarh and has many temples in and around its vicinity which explains the rich cultural and traditional significance of the state. South Eastern Coalfields Limited, the biggest coal producing industry in the country, is located in Chirmiri. This beautiful hill station is filled with a lush green landscape everywhere that attracts many a tourist to its premises. A remarkable feature of Chirmiri is the Lord Jagannath temple that is designed exactly like the famous temple at Puri. Chirmiri has the credit of being the second biggest crane in the Asian continent.
History of Chirmiri
The first coal refinery unit was opened in Chirmiri during 1930. This was followed by a series of mines like New Chirmiri colliery, Pure Chirmiri Colliery and North Chirmiri Colliery that were opened in the years 1942, 1945 and 1946 respectively. By the year 1980, Chirmiri was producing around 3162500 tonnes of coal every year due to the establishment of may coal mines like Duman Hill, New Chirmiri Pondi Hills, Korea collieries and West Chirmiri mines. These mines that were under the ownership of many companies like Chirmiri Colliery Company Limited, United Collieries Limited and many more were finally nationalised during 1973.
Geographical location
Chirmiri is located in the Koriya district in Chhattisgarh. It is surrounded by temples, coal mines, immense greenery and a pleasant climate all through the year. It is located at 23.20 degrees towards the North and 82.35 degrees towards the East.
How to reach and local transport
Air – Raipur Airport, at a distance of 228km, is the nearest to Chirmiri. Jabalpur airport, at a distance of 244km, is the other airport nearby.
Rail – Chirmiri Railway station is the nearest railway station to this place.
Road – Lots of buses are operated by the State Government and private operators from almost all the main cities of Chhattisgarh and the neighbouring states. There are local taxis and cabs that ply to Chirmiri on a daily basis.
Local transport – Travelling on foot is the best option to commute within Chirmiri.
Tourist Attractions and things to do
Amrit Dhara Waterfalls is the major tourist attraction in Chirmiri. This famous tourist spot has a dense forest cover that has some of the exotic species of flora and fauna around this waterfalls. A temple dedicated to Lord Shiva attracts many Hindu devotees. This temple is a very old temple and the Shivarathri festival celebrated here very year is a huge crowd puller. Trekking, forest camps and nature walks are some of the activities that tourists can engage in, when they come to Chirmiri.

Pathway is one of the finest restaurants in Chirmiri. Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian food are famous in Chirmiri. The Tandoori Tikkas, Roti, Dhal fry etc. are some of the local delicacies here.
