Thamarassery
Overview of Thamarassery
The highlight of Thamarassery town is its location. It is strategically located in such a way that many highways and state-run expressways are situated in close proximity to it, thereby ensuring better connectivity and increased tourist inflow. This is located on the highway that connects Calicut with Mysore via the mesmerising Wayanad. During the days before Independence, Thamarassery was under the control of kings who ruled over Kottayam. Today, Thamarassery is one of the most developed places in Kozhikode district with many government offices, business establishments and educational institutions. The local inhabitants of this town are mostly farmers who work on the coconut and rubber estates of the state. Kerala’s first rubber estate is found in Thamarassery. The famous highway around this hilly town known as Thamarassery Churam has featured in lots of Malayalam movies.
History
Until the British took over control of this place, Thamarassery was ruled over by the Kottayam kings. The first name of this place was Thazhmalacherry, which later got transformed to Thamarassery due to usage. When the British started invading India, they fought with the Kottayam kings to take control over this place as well. In the war that ensued, many Kottayam kings lost their lives. One of the most spoken about warrior who performed bravely under the rule of Kottayam kings and fought for the glory of his motherland until his last breath was Payampally Chandu. Today, visitors to the Thamarassery Kotayil Sree Bhagavathi Temple can see this brave warrior’s tomb, in the premises of this temple.
Geographical location
This scenic hill town of Thamarassery is located in Kozhikode district. The town is set up on 56sq.km of land and is famous for its coconut and rubber plantations. This town is inclined at 11.24 degrees towards the North and 75.55 degrees towards the East.
How to reach and local transport
Air – Kozhikode Airport, at a distance of 56km, is the closest to Thamarassery.
Rail – Kozhikode Railway station, at a distance of 30km, is the nearest railway station to Thamarassery.
Road – There are lots of government and private sector buses that run between important cities of Kerala like Kozhikode, Kottayam, Kochi, Idukki, Thiruvananthapuram, Wayanad etc. and Thamarassery on daily basis. There are also hired cars available from the Kozhikode airport and railway station.
Local transport – Tourists can use local buses and auto rickshaws to go around the town of Thamarassery.
Tourist Attractions and Things to do
Thusharagiri Waterfalls is a big tourist attraction near Thamarassery town. In addition to this, the Public Library that was set up in the town during 1946 is a great place to spend time and observe the collection. The coconut plantations and rubber estates keep tourists quite engaged during their trip here. Trekking, sight-seeing and shopping are some of the activities that tourists can indulge in while they come to Thamarassery.

Garlic Routes, Rehmaniya, Sree Hari Hotel and Shine Hotel are some of the good places to eat around Thamarassery town. All these places offer vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Vegetarian fare like Aviyal, red steamed rice, stew, deserts like Ada Pradhaman, chukka Pradhaman, non-vegetarian dishes like fish curry, mutton and beef curry – all cooked in aromatic and authentic Kerala spices are must try delicacies here.

There are a few 3-star hotels in and around Thamarassery like Hotels Malabar Gate, Asma Tower, Renai Kappad Beach Resort and Vasco Da Gama Beach Resort. These are mostly preferred by international tourists as the services are quite good here. Other than this, international and Indian tourists prefer the homestays where they get to enjoy the local essence of the place. Homestays like Liberty, Metro Tourist Home, Harivihar Ayurvedic Heritage Home and Saravana Bhavan Tourist Homes are some budget accommodation options for tourists.
