Sathuragiri Hills
A look into the overview and history of the place
The word Chathrua or Sathura means square and the word Giri means Hill in the Tamil language. Therefore, Sathuragiri can be literally translated as “Hills in the shape of a square”. Chatur also means 4 Vedas. These hills are considered to be the place where the 4 Vedas culminate into one. Another name for Sathuragiri Hills is Sundara Mahalingam. Even today, many people believe that Lord Shiva resides here and that there are many Siddhars who reside here to worship the Lord. Around 18 Siddhars are believed to be living here. The forests within these hills have a statue of Lord Shiva. With all these beliefs and no concise proof to prove anything, there are lots of mysteries surrounding these hills. The irony, however is that, these mysteries make these hills more attractive.
Where exactly is this located?
Sathuragiri Hills are located at a distance of around 10km from Vaithirairuppu close to Srivilliputhur. This is located in the Virudunagar district of Tamil Nadu.
How to reach and local modes of transport
Air – Madurai Airport, which is located at a distance of about 72km, is the closest to Sathuragiri Hills.
Rail – Srivilliputhur is the nearest railway station to Sathuragiri Hills.
Road – There are lots of government sector and private sector buses that connect Sathuragiri Hills with important districts like Madurai, Virudunagar, Srivilliputhur, Kovilpatti, Sivakasi and Theni every day.
Local modes – Trekking is the best way to get to these hills. There are specific trekking routes at Thaniparai, Kambam and Saptur.
Attractions around Sathuragiri Hills and Things to do
Sathuragiri Hills, being the abode of Lord Shiva is a very religious place. There are several places in the hills, where tourists can feel something special when they pay attention to it. The entire town of Waithirairuppu is surrounded by many ancient temples like Kasi Vishwanath, Sethu Narayana Swamy, Muthalamman, Ganapathy, Vellai Pillaiyar, Nallathangal, Karuppaswamy and Nagalakshmi. The famous Andal temple at Srivilliputhur is a must visit mainly for its stupendous Gopuram. Trekking and having a clean mind set during this pilgrimage tour are few things that tourists must do while they come here.
Where to eat and local specialities
Pilgrims who come to Sathuragiri Hills usually have food in the Annadhanam Scheme followed in many temples where free food is offered to the people who visit the temples. The food, though free, tastes great and there are lots of foreigners too who willingly have this food at the various temple around Sathuragiri Hills. The town of Srivilliputhur is famous for its Pal Khoa sweet, which is sold in almost all shops here. This is a must-taste delicacy here.
Where to stay
Another interesting concept followed here is that there are no hotels where people can stay. Tourists and pilgrims who come to Sathuragiri Hills must stay in the temple premises, mostly in the Anandavalli Amman Temple or the Annadhana Madam. Tourists need to carry their own bed sheet, pillow and blanket for sleeping in the temple.
