Overview of Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
The characteristic feature of Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is its huge elephant population. These animals move around freely in the dense forests of these regions, which is why, this site has been declared as Project Elephant Site. This place is also known as Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and is an important member in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve Project. Peafowl, which is otherwise a rare bird in the country, is found here in large numbers. Likewise, there are other varieties of rare species of flora and fauna that are preserved in a very efficient manner in the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. This is located on the route that connects Mysore and Sultan Bathery.
History of the Place
The Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary was built during 1973 and since then has been one of the biggest places in the country to offer protection to many species of wild animals, birds, plants and trees. This is the second biggest sanctuary in Kerala. Within the first few years of its existence, the Muthanga sanctuary started seeing an increase in the number of elephants that resided in its premises. Over the years, this place has become one of the main breeding places of these pachyderms, which is why, during 1991-92, the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary was given the status of “Project Elephant Site”.
Geographical location
This sanctuary is located in Wayanad district in Kerala on areas sprawling up to 345sq.km. It is located on the main highway that connects Mysore and Sultan Bathery and inclined at 11.67 degrees towards the North and 76.38 degrees towards the East.
How to reach and local transport
Air – Kozhikode Airport at Karipur at a distance of 120km from Sultan Bathery is the nearest airport to Muthanga.
Rail – Kozhikode railway station at a distance of 97km from Sultan Bathery is the closest railway station to Muthanga
Road – Many buses connect Muthanga with various places in Wayanad district and other districts of Kerala.
Local mode – Jeeps are available in the sanctuaries for tourists to undertake safaris and roam within the place.
Tourist Attractions and Things todo
Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, Jain Temple, Meppadi (where there are many waterfalls), Panamaram (scenic village), Meenangudi (home of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church), Phantom Rock, Chethalayam Waterfalls, Mariyamman Temple and Ganpathy temple at Muthanga are some of the major tourist attractions in and around this place. The main activities for tourists who come here is to participate in wildlife safaris, bird-watching expeditions and undertake nature walks within the jungles.
Places to eat and local cuisine
Muthanga Mess is situated in close vicinity to the wildlife sanctuary and it is an affordable eatery. Madhur Restaurant and Mint Flower Restaurant are other good options to eat in Muthanga. Non-vegetarians must try out the fish curry and other meat curries cooked with authentic coconut, green chillies and ginger gravy, whereas vegetarians must try out dishes like aviyal, elissery, kalan etc.
