Khonsa
An overview of Khonsa
Situated in the district of Tirap in Arunachal Pradesh, Khonsa is a beautiful hill station. It is one of the most diverse hill stations in the country as people who belong to many states have settled here. As a major part of the population is Christian, English is the official language of Khonsa.
History of Khonsa
One can find this hill station positioned beautifully at the very east of the country. Initially, the tribal population belonging to the Wanchoo sect were living in Khonsa. As the days went by, many people from neighbouring states of Assam, Nagaland and Meghalaya and nearby countries of Bangladesh and Burma travelled to Khonsa and began settling down in the beautiful hill station. It was almost known as “Forgotten Land” because of its remote location. Situated at a height of around 3000 feet above sea Level, the people of Khonsa are deep rooted in their culture and traditions. Set in the thick forest covers, Khonsa is home to various species of wildlife and birds. Ramakrishna Sarada Mission School is a famous government school in Khonsa.
Where is Khonsa located?
Khonsa is situated in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district. The hill station is also the headquarters of this district. The geographical identities of Khonsa are 27.02 degrees towards the North and 95.57 degrees towards the East.
How to reach Khonsa and local transport
Air – Dibrugarh, located at about 100km away, is the closest airport to Khonsa. There are lots of domestic flights from here to Guwahati and Kolkata daily.
Rail – The nearest railway stations to Khonsa are Namrup and Borhat, both of which are 29km away from this hill station.
Road – There are private and government buses connecting Khonsa with all the major cities of Arunachal Pradesh and neighbouring states.
Local transport – Since Khonsa is a very small hill station, tourists prefer to cover it on foot. Trekking is another way to get to the nearby places in and around the hills.
Sightseeing places at Khonsa
Khonsa Museum is a huge tourist attraction in this hill station. There is a huge collection of goods used by tribes in this museum that gives the tourists a flavour of the tribal lifestyle. Artefacts made from bamboo and handlooms are the major crowd-pullers here.
Things to do in Khonsa
Trekking and hiking are the only two activities that tourists can engage themselves in while visiting Khonsa. One must possess extraordinary physical stamina to trek through the challenging trails of Khonsa.
Famous restaurants and local delicacies of Khonsa
Circuit House and Raj Hotel which are the only reasonable accommodation options in Khonsa also have in-house restaurants serving tasty local delicacies of rice, meat, fish and millet. This area is also known for its rice beer which is the official drink of the tribal population here.
