Solan
Overview of Solan
Solan is an important tourist destination in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It is located strategically between the important tourist places between Chandigarh and Shimla. Solan is also well connected with the major rail line connecting Kalka and Shimla. The Shoolni Devi temple in Solan is a major tourist spot here.
History of Solan
Solan got its name from the famous Shoolni Devi Temple, in which an enormous fair is conducted during the month of June every year. Even during the days when Solan was ruled by kings from various dynasties, this temple festival was celebrated on a grand scale for 3 days. Solan has been famous for the large number of mushrooms that are grown here as the soil is compatible for mushrooms. Therefore, it is known as the City of Mushrooms. Right from the days of the British rule, Solan has also been named as the City of Red Gold, because of the large number of tomatoes that are cultivated here.
Geographical location
Solan district in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh is spread across 33.43sq.km. It is at a height of 1502m or 4928feet above sea level. Solan is located at 30.9 degrees towards the North and 77.09 degrees towards the East.
How to reach and local transport
Air – Shimla airport, at a distance of 45km, is the nearest to Solan.
Rail – Chandigarh railway station and Shimla railway station are at a distance of 68km and 48km respectively are the nearest to Solan.
Road – Solan is well connected with all the important cities of Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring states through state government and private sector buses. Taxis and jeeps too are available from the airport and railway stations.
Local transport – Local buses, jeeps and trekking are the local modes of transport within Solan.
Tourist Attractions and things to do
Barog (which offers excellent view of the snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas), Shoolni Devi Temple, Bon Monastery, Jatoli Shiv Temple, Kasauli (scenic town), Karol Tibba (trekking spot), Chail (polo and cricket ground) and many other tourist spots are the attractions of Solan. Trekking, paragliding, nature camps and sightseeing are some of the activities that tourists can do here.

Haveli Restaurant is one of the best places to eat in Solan. There are many other resorts and hotels here that have in house restaurants. The local specialities of this place are Poode, Askalu, Patande and Sidu.

Mayur Hotel and Hotel Amar are some of the best places to stay here. These are budget accommodations for the benefit of the tourists who cannot afford star hotels.
