Mashobra
Overview of Mashobra
Mashobra, one of the best summer retreats in the world, is situated in the scenic district of Shimla. Shimla, which is also the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, is connected with Mashobra via the famous route of Hindustan and Tibet Road, which was constructed by Lord Dalhousie in the eighteenth century around 1850. This belongs to the Shimla Reserve Forest Sanctuary and has a spell-bounding culture of flora and fauna which is a visual treat for nature lovers. Animals like jackals, monkeys, barking deer and few leopards, birds like pheasant, Himalayan eagle and partridges and trees like pine, chestnut, oak, fir and deodar are found in large numbers here.
History of MashobraH
Mashobra is quite famous all over the country because it is only one of the two retreats in the country where the President resorts to, once every year. Rashtrapati Nilayam in the city of Secunderabad in Andhra Pradesh is the only other Presidential retreats in India. A beautiful house constructed during 1850, entirely out of wood in Chharabra, close to Mashobra is the place where the Indian President moves his or her office to, once every year. During 1948, Lord Mountbatten, who had completed his tenure as Viceroy of India, spent some time at the Mashobra retreat , along with his wife Lady Edwina. According to Lady Edwina’s biographies, Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the Prime Minister of India back then had visited them in the retreat during this time.
Geographical location
Mashobra is a quiet and scenic tourist spot in the hill station of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. The height of this place is 2146m or about 7041feet above sea level. It is located at 31.13 degrees towards the North and 77.23 degrees towards the East.
How to reach and local transport
Air - Shimla Airport, at a distance of 40km, is the closest to Mashobra.
Rail – Kalka railway station, at a distance of 105km, is the nearest to Mashobra.
Road – Since Shimla is one of the premium tourist destinations of the country, it is connected very well with all the important cities in North India through government and private sector buses that are both luxury and normal types. From Shimla, there are local buses and taxis that ply frequently to Mashobra.
Local transport – Jeeps and other vehicles suited for hilly terrain can be used for going around the scenic town of Mashobra.
Tourist Attractions and things to do
The historic residential place of Lord Kitchener and Lord Ripon during the pre-Independence time, Windflower Hall, is an excellent piece of architecture. This is now part of the prestigious Oberoi hotel group and can be found at Chharabra. During Queen Victoria’s rule in India, Chevalier Federico Peliti was a reputed Italian photographer. He had a villa close to Mashobra and named it Carignano, after a town in his native country, Italy. This place is still a big picnic spot and tourists who come here are awestruck at the architectural brilliance and the artistic nature of the place. Sightseeing and trekking are the main activities in Mashobra.
Places to eat and local cuisine
Kenney House and Tea Bliss at Mashobra are some of the famous restaurants in Mashobra. Fruit juices (mainly of plum and litchis) are available in plenty in the state of Himachal Pradesh, as the state grows many fruits on its lands. Foods like Bhatooru, Siddu, Marchu and pickles made from brinjal and bottle guard are some of the local delicacies here.
