Overview of Dehradun
Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand state and is located at a height of 636m or about 2087 feet above sea level. This place is located in the Doon Valley and is one of the most beautiful places of Uttarakhand. Its proximity to the national capital of Delhi, has made it one of the Counter Magnets of the National Capital Region. It is a wonderful tourist destination at the base of the mighty Himalayas and is covered by the Holy Ganges towards its East and the sacred river of Yamuna towards its West. History of Dehradun
Dehra means home and Doon denotes the valley in which this place is situated. Dehradun has a rich history which is mentioned in the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. After the terrible war in which Lord Ram defeated Lankan king Ravan, it is believed that Dehradun was visited by Lord Ram and Lord Lakshman. Likewise, in the Mahabharata epic, the revered teacher of Pandavas and Kauravas, Guru Dronacharya was born and brought up in Dehradun. The remnants of the rocks and structures found in this place are believed to be around 2000 years old, which explains the rich history of Dehradun.
Dehradun is located in Doon Valley of Uttarakhand state. It is situated between the sacred Rivers of Ganges and Yamuna, at a height of around 2087 feet above sea level. The majestic Himalayas are found towards the North, Sivalik Hills towards the South, River Ganges towards the East and River Yamuna towards the West. It is located at 30.31 degrees towards the North and 78.02 degrees towards the East.

Rail – Dehradun railway station, at a distance of just 2km, is the nearest to Dehradun city.
Road – There are lots of buses from all the important cities of Uttarakhand and other neighbouring states to Dehradun on a daily basis. There are also of taxis and rental cars that operate between Dehradun and other important cities.
Local transport – Local buses and taxis on hire are the best ways to commute within Dehradun. However, travelling on foot is the best way to explore the town.
