The famous Barog tunnel through trains going on the Kalka – Shimla railway line pass through is located in this hill station. Trains that travel at about 25km per hour take about 2 and a half minutes to pass through this tunnel. At a length of around 1144m, this tunnel has the distinction of being the longest in the world. This place has got its name from Colonel Barog, an engineer who took part in constructing this tunnel during 1903. During the construction of the tunnel, Barog dug up both the sides of the mountain as was the usual process. However halfway through the construction, he know that he made some errors while calculating the distance which resulted in the ends of the tunnel not meeting each other. The British Government who was angry with Barog on his shoddy work, asked him to pay a fine of One Rupee. Barog got so embarrassed at the punishment meted out to him, that he committed suicide. He was buried in the premises of the tunnel itself, which is why, even today the place is named after him. Later on the work of the tunnel was completed at a cost of 8.40 lakh rupees by the team headed by the Chief Engineer, HS Harrington.
