Snow Skiing
Snow-skiing is one of the most loved adventure sports activities in the country and across the world. The extreme northern parts of India that witness abundant snowfall during the winter seasons are perfect places to enjoy this sport. Anyone who has an eye for adventure must try this game to understand the thrill that it brings to them. This adventure sport is quite old and there are evidences to prove that skiing was practiced during 600BC in yesteryear China. Snow skiing has seen a lot of variations over the years. It is practiced in different ways in different countries. During the 18th century, skiing was only done on asymmetrical skis. A long ski was worn on one leg and a short one was worn on the other. The longer one was used for sliding and the shorter version was used for kicking.
Till this time, skiing was practiced as a way of life as it was the only way of transport back then. Poles and spears were used for skiing in the earlier years. It was only in the latter part of 18th century that skiing became an adventure sport and one which tourists used to practice for recreational purposes. In India, skiing is extensively carried out in the Himalayan mountain areas. The Indian Mountaineering Foundation governs all activities related to skiing in the country. Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand are few of the states where skiing is done commonly in India.
Precautions to be used while doing snow-skiing
As is the case with all kinds of adventure sports activities, snow-skiing too has its share of risks. You should take up snow-skiing only if you have had the basic training on the same and only if you are fully aware of the safety precautions that need to be followed. This way, you can prevent yourself from injuries and enjoy your experience. Here are some of the things that you need to pay attention to, before you set out on your skiing trip.
-
Physical fitness – This is very important, because only if you are physically fit, you can have a safe snow skiing experience. Avoid the sport if you have chronic chest congestions, respiratory infections, asthma problems etc.
-
Equipment – To ensure that you have a safe snow skiing experience, you should have proper equipment that is bought from branded stores. If your equipment is of low-quality, it could give away midway, resulting in lots of trouble for you. Once you have bought the equipments properly, ensure that you try adjusting them previously in the way that you are comfortable. Try these on and check thoroughly before going for skiing.
-
Gear and clothes – This is probably the most important thing that you should focus on, when you start for skiing. Ensure that you are properly dressed in multiple layers of cloth. Wear dresses that have maximum resistance against wind and water. Ensure that areas like your wrists, ankles, collars and chin are comfortable, because even if you experience a slight discomfort here, skiing can turn out to be a disastrous experience for you. Always remember to wear proper head-gear. Experts advise wearing a helmet as it protects your brain in the unlikely event of an accident taking place. Never underestimate the power of sun rays as snow has the capacity to reflect sun rays strongly. Always wear sun-screen lotions to prevent damages or rashes to your skin. Never venture out for skiing in your naked eyes. Wear transparent and comfortable goggles always as they give maximum protection to your eyes.
-
Training – You must ensure that you do a basic training course on snow-skiing and understand the basic techniques of the sport before you actually start doing it. There are many professional trainers in the skiing locations in the country, from whom you can take crash courses on the fundamental concepts of snow-skiing. Knowing the basic essentials of the sport will give you the right amount of confidence and mental balance.
-
Liquid intake – You must come prepared for snow-skiing by drinking plenty of water. This will help you to remain fully hydrated when you play the sport. Also, you must always remember that you should never consume alcohol or other drugs before skiing. Alcohol and drugs consumption will make you weak physically and mentally, thereby leading to accidents and injuries.
Equipment used for snow-skiing
If you plan to indulge in snow skiing, you must equip yourself with all the essential accessories that are mandatory for the sport. The first and foremost equipment, without which snow skiing becomes impossible, is the skis. While selecting skis, a lot of factors need to be considered. They are age, gender and weight of a person, location of skiing etc. If you are just a beginner who is interested to try out the sport for the first time, renting skiing equipment would be the ideal decision. This is because, these accessories cost a lot and hence, unless you are sure you are comfortable with the sport, you must never invest too much in them.
Ski boots, that are perfect for the snow-capped areas, are the next important thing that you would need while going for snow skiing. Choose the boots in which you are comfortable and never buy anything just because your friends or colleagues recommend them, because they are from a branded manufacturer or because they are expensive. The next important equipment to tick off in your check list would be eye goggles. You must choose eyewear which will provide maximum protection for your eyes and will provide you a good vision in the mountain area. Ski helmets and ski gloves are the next things that you need. These are mandatory as they will save your life in the unfortunate event of an accident.
