Snow Skiing in Kufri
Kufri is just about 16km from Shimla. This is one of the most beautiful places in the state of Himachal Pradesh. With its beautiful valleys and snow-capped peaks all over, Kufri is a place that dons a different picture during the winter season. It is not without reason that the place is known as the capital of winter sports activities in the state. Snow-skiing is the most commonly done adventure sports activity here. The skiing slopes in Kufri are not only one of the longest, but also one of the oldest in the state. This place is located at a height of about 2622m above sea level; hence people, who come here for skiing, are sure to experience a thrilling moment in their lives. There are different kinds of skiing slopes in Kufri in order to help beginners as well as professionals.
Kufri was discovered as an ideal winter sports destination in the 1930s by the British rulers and from that time till the 1970s and 1980s, Kufri experienced a golden period as it was the prime snow-skiing destination in North India. It was also easily accessible, which was another feather on its cap. However, in the recent past, locations like Solang Valley, Auli etc. have started gaining popularity, due to which, Kufri’s reputation as a snow skiing destination has started to fade. Many private entrepreneurs have joined together to revive skiing slopes in Kufri once again with the aim to restore its past glory. As a result of this, tourists who visited Kufri in 2014, were pleasantly thrilled to note that Kufri was slowly getting back in shape to live up to its status of the “winter sports hub” of Himachal Pradesh.
How to reach Kufri
Since Shimla is very near to Kufri, it is very easy to reach here by all modes of transport.
By Air: Chandigarh airport in Punjab, at a distance of 61km and Bhuntar Airport in Kulu (Himachal Pradesh), at distance of 94km, are the two of the airports that are quite near to Kufri. International tourists can first reach the Indira Gandhi International Airport at Delhi and then take a domestic flight from there to Shimla. Flights from Delhi to Shimla and vice versa are available in large numbers all through the day.
By Rail: There are no major rail heads in Kufri. Hence tourists who travel by train must first get down at the Shimla railway junction or Summer Hill railway station in Shimla (both of which are 11km away from Kufri) and then take private cabs from here to get to the place.
By Road: There are no government sector or private sector buses that run to Kufri. The nearest bus stop is Shimla, at 11km distance or Narkanda, at 26km distance. From these bus stops, local cars and taxis are available in plenty to reach Kufri.
Snow skiing charges in Kufri
Kufri belongs to the district of Shimla. Hence when tourists book their adventure sports package for Shimla, most of the tour operators also cover Kufri as well. Located at 2622m above sea level, Kufri was one of the most sought after skiing destinations in North India in the earlier years. The charges of snow skiing are usually covered in the package cost itself. However, tourists who want to visit Kufri separately, should be ready to shell out anywhere between 600 and 1000INR for an hour of snow skiing. The cost of skiing gear and accessories should be paid in addition to this skiing charge.
Top service providers of skiing in Kufri
National Adventure Foundation that was set up in 1979 is one of the top operators in Shimla when it comes to organising snow skiing and other adventure sports packages in the entire state of Himachal Pradesh. Similarly, Chrysalid Outdoors is another tour operator that organises adventure tours in many areas of the state in Himachal Pradesh like Auli, Gulmarg, Narkanda and Kufri. By February, snow starts melting in areas like Kufri; hence tourists flock to this place during December itself to make full use of the snowy treks and trails here.
